We have lived about 50 kilometers south of Loei city for more than 10 years. Never once in all those years have I seen our pond go completely dry. The rice and sugarcane crops are a disaster. Fortunately we don't depend on the farm income, BUT, the local farmers are hurting.

The only good thing about this is that I was able to get a big Cat excavator in to enlarge and deepen the pond.Hopefully we will have a normal rainy season to fill it up.

Great a bit of forward thinking, maybe you should apply to assist the Thais, they have zero forward thinking just sit there and wring their collective hands .

Hi Glait
We did that last year, dug out two ponds to make one and deepened the whole thing by over a meter. It did fill up during the rainy season but overall result the same, just a bigger surface area for evaporation. If you are dependent on rainwater (as we are) it will dry out eventually if same as this year ie no real rain since September.

Okay in your area, maybe but in others they are sucking all and any available water sources so dry it will take an extraordinary monsoon season to replenish the natural system .

If they are doing that, I imagine it is because they need to do so to survive.

After all, many don't have much choice do they?

They increased the capacity of our local lake in Kham Kling a couple of years ago , with the help of central government money . They made the surface area slightly bigger , but they also went down to at least 30 meters .

The excavator did a nice job. We were able to substantially widen the road leading to the pond.

I've been here for nearly 12 years, never had a problem with our well but it's running out of water now.

Nice overnight soak was gratefully accepted by the trees and plants.
Had a quick hit late evening but must have sprinkled for some time as woke up to a wet yard and pooling on the concrete.
My usual 6am yard watering was not needed.
Hope the forecast for more rain in the next couple of days eventuates. Before the heat rapidly cranks up again for Songkran.

21.5 mm in the gauge this morning and another 5.3mm to be recorded tomorrow. Looks like more at 16:30 on the way, very grey.
Happy days in the rice paddies of Ban Dung!
