The price of on the spot fines will be going up.
At the moment it is 200 baht for failing to stop at a red traffic light.
The new system is between 1800 & 3200 baht.
The BIB will make a fortune unless cameras are installed at Traffic lights.

Should be, "How many Drivers have you seen stop at a Pedestrian Crosswalk?"

Are these new traffic laws actual law now or are the Thai Gov still discussing.

The part about passengers also being responsible in the cases of Drunk Driving amuse me a lot, having seen on a few occasions, drivers getting really angry if drunk by being told they are drunk .

My experience is that the cop sitting roadside writing out legit traffic tickets is getting as rare as the face-masked and sunglasses-wearing traffic cop leaning through your window while you slip a couple of red ones under your driving license. These 'land shark' is being systematically removed from this bit of the Thai moving traffic violation equation.

Unless you don't get out of your moobahn much, you can't miss the rash of unmanned, radar-enabled cameras at traffic intersections and on the overhead gantries on stretches of suburban roads where there are huge 80 kph speed limit and speed camera warning signs, both in Thai and English. The ticket in the post for speeding or red-light running is an increasing frustration for those farangs that assumed the Thai driving style as a birthright, complain how the nanny state takes the fun out of speeding back home while lamenting the gradually decreasing freedom to get drunk and go for a drive in Thailand.

Thirty years ago, the only car insurance one needed in Thailand was a monk's blessing.

Then, faced with attracting foreign investment against competition from similarly challenged southeast Asian nations, they introduced a compulsory minimum liability insurance.

As the penny collectively dropped that insurance was not just "paying for something you may never need", more locals got themselves 1st and 2nd class insurance as well.

The cultural indolence and corruption of the RTP has long-stymied any meaningful advances in road safety here. Insurance has gradually wrestled the age-old, money-making practice of a police-negotiated settlement between drivers. If there's any single thing that the junta-masquerading-as-a-government can take a bow for, it's this increasing adoption of automated methods, proven in the west, that encourage safer driving, inflicts punishment on the habitual reckless or illegal driver and no longer pads the pockets of feckless cops.

Good with the intent of making the roads safer for pedestrians, but there so many other factors in the thai driving that also needs adressing...I am sure alot of the drivers dont even have a genuine driving license to start with. 😳

I've often stopped for pedestrians who are trying to cross near the 3 traffic circles in town. As there's no light at any of those circles, the pedestrians have to find a break in traffic, which is often difficult. A word of caution.....I was once in the left most lane, stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross, and that pedestrian was almost run over by a car in the right lane next to me. Realizing that most Thais aren't going to stop, I'm now more cautious.....checking to be sure there's not someone in the lane next to me (who might not be willing to stop).

Lastly, in an attempt to always present the other side of the story, 23 years here......with one exception a long time ago of a rogue cop on the highway looking for lunch money, all my tickets (a few) have been legitimate ones. I've been stopped dozens of times for a license check and waved on. I find the system quite fair.

No problem understanding, only enquiring if these laws are actually law yet since article in link was posted May 19!

Good point politely made... forgive me my earlier arseseholiness.

Those are quite draconian changes and if they had been implemented, I am pretty sure the media and forums would have already lit up with the righteously indignant. I guess it's still waiting for approval by whoever will make the most money or political cache out of doing so.
