Mekong to Huay Luang dam connector

Post by FrazeeDK » July 14, 2019, 8:29 pm

I could be wrong but this seems to be the Mekong to Huay Luang pumped/canaled connector talked about for a long time.. If so, it looks like they won't have to worry about Huay Luang reservoir getting low ever again.. That is, barring the 7 Chinese dams and 1 Lao dam on the Mekong cutting off all the water.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaBI0kj ... asD_Po34iA

They will need help from Mother Nature and all the parties involved. Both Laos and China wish to power the Mekong Bassin.

They have used pumps in the past to pump water upstream on the River Luang from the Mekong. This will be a more permanent solution.

When we moved to Udon in 1996, there were few subdivisions, landscaped areas, swimming pools, car washes, nurseries, fountains, flushable toilets for that matter! While the city has grown, I'm not aware of any significant increase in reservoir capacity at Huai Luang. Some new living quarters for the workers there and some very limited dredging some years ago......but meanwhile, piped in city water is the norm through most of the city....including outlying city villages.
Judging by the low levels of Huai Luang, I'll guess that some city officials are hoping the project is completed sooner rather than later.
It's on the books as a mega-project....21 billion baht over 9 years. Constructions apparently began in mid-2018

A few years ago some UM members commented about the lack of planning on the part of city officials. Contrary to that school of thought, I see planning on a wide variety of fronts.....vehicle traffic, air travel, tourism, roads, reservoirs, housing for low income, event planning, etc. The fb page that frazeedk posted above shows a variety of plans/ideas being batted around by the city.
None of the plans will lower the cost of a beer, but most all the plans will improve the lives of Udon residents in the future.

Where has all the water gone, long time passing.
Mekong adjacent to Vientiane. You can see the remaining water in the top center.

seven dams on the Mekong in China, one in Laos.. That's where the water's likely gone...

Early August 2002.. No lack of water back then.. In fact it was so high it almost flooded the city...

starts in Phon Phisai east of Nong Khai on the Mekong. Then follows the Huai Luang creek/river down towards Udon.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrSUGteIE4Q
