What makes Thailand the greatest country in the world
Re: What makes Thailand the greatest country in the world
Why I live in Thailand? High on the list is my hatred of cold weather. The only place I ever want to see ice again is in my glass. Also important is that the cost of living is lower than most other countries. Another is I am not taxed to death here. Thailand also has many very scenic areas. Finally Thailand is the Land of Smiles. Contrary to what some say, they are not phony smiles. Yes, there are warts but they are far outweighed by the positive things.
Unlike some people, no way would I live somewhere that I despise. If you came here with a pocket full of money and have blown it all, that is your fault. It's not only Thailand where scams are common. You don't have to be wealthy to enjoy life here but you do have to look out for number one because no one else is going to look after you.

Re: What makes Thailand the greatest country in the world
There do seem to be a surprisingly high number of people who despise or dislike Thailand but still live there. I'd go even more bananas if I was living in those circumstances.
I reckon the Thais are great fun. They're nearly as much fun as our number 1 Everton fan's entertaining posts on the Toffees.

as for all the folks living here that spew on about various disliked things in Thailand.. Well, I'd wager if they were living in their home country they'd equally find things to moan and groan about.. Remember, the troops ain't happy unless they're bitchin'..

Yes, it's human nature.
I admit I get frustrated about things when I'm in Thailand and about other things when back in the UK.

Agree with some of the points above, in that Thailand has its attractions and its non-attractions, depending on what stage of your life you are at and probably how old you are.
For me approaching retirement, what attracts me about Thailand,
1a.Affordability, you can live a very comfortable lifestyle in Thailand, in your latter years, for say half of what it would cost for the same, in Australia. Just as one indicator - In 2017 the cost of living in Melbourne city apartment per month, was estimated to be
Utilities $430 or TB 10,750
Rent (45m2 Quality Studio Apartment) $1930 or TB 48,250
Total TB 59,000
I am 100% sure that I could get a very good 45m2 good quality apartment in Bangkok (and pay Utilities paid) for TB 30,000 in the inner area of Sukhumvit Bangkok (i.e.in Nana, Asoke, Phrom Phong or Ekkamai). Near half the price and I can tell you Melbourne is not twice as good as Bangkok.
1b. Many of those that I have worked with for the past 10 -14 years, are doing the same and retiring to Thailand for their own various reasons, so it will simply be a continuation in part of the present circle of friends.
2.A reasonably laid back lifestyle - You can do what you want any day and at your pace. It not overly regulated, not up in Issan anyway, from what I have seen.
3.Easy to jump from Country lifestyle to City lifestyle or Beach lifestyle, only on hour by plane. Try having the choice of three lifestyles places in Australia and see what it costs you.
4.Relatively safe, provided that you move in the right circles. I know some will disagree about Thailand being safe, but haven’t at any time felt unsafe in Thailand in the past 15 years. Cant say same about Australia these days.
5.An OK-Good Medical system. You can get reasonably good private coverage for TB 50,000 per year (BUPA or....). If you don’t trust it in Thailand, then its within easy reach in Singapore.
6.All year round good weather - I can acclimatize to the humidity for a few months of the year, but I cannot do the same with the snow and the cold, not at this age.
7. Most importantly girls without a fat arse. To have to walk down the street behind a fat arse (as you would every day in Australia) is not my cut of tea =D> I didn't work all these years, just to have to walk behind a Bus on the Footpath
Dislikes:
1. Try and get a straight answer like a Yes or a No out of a Thai Shop Assistant. No, what you get is a 10 minute conversation between her and your TG and even then you still don't get your answer of yes or no?? You get a Maybe
2. Try and get a Taxi Driver or anyone for that matter to read a map and give you directions. Thank god for Google Map and its street locator map and street view

And critically the young P*ssy is easily available for older gentlemen. Even if they look like a bush pig.

It's not just about tourism. Thailand is the most popular place among Russian freelancers. My brother lives here every year from November to April at a time when it is cold in Russia. He also tried to live in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, but Thailand was better in terms of price and quality of life. And the beaches here are the best.

It's the somtam -- and the irregularly scheduled power outages.
Nothing whispers softly "tropical paradise" into your ears like another fai dap at 4 p.m. when it's 46 degrees in the f'n shade.

I like Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Sweden.
But, I can see how the Danish language would make living in that country tedious at times,

Izzix, who cares what stickman thinks or does?. He is not the guru of Thailand. But you are right about the growing number of fat people, including farangs, in Thailand.

Some of those old men who are returning to their home country are doing it mainly to receive free health care and welfare benefits.
