Big C has a reasonable selection price wise? I bought mine there four years ago at the best price (Acer)

You have to decide what you are actually going to do with the pc.
That will then give you an idea of the specifications you require.
From that, see who is giving a good deal on what you want.

Supermarkets are, in general, not the best place to buy computer equipment. The staff will have little technical ability to answer any questions that you have. Plus, what you see is what you get. If you go to a specialist computer shop then it is possible to 'mix & match' to get a more suitable piece of equipment at a better price.

I would certainly look in Power Buyer, Banana & JIB in the Plaza.
If you want something highly specialised (for Gaming or Bit Coin mining for example) then you may well be better off going to one of the small Advice stores & getting them to make you one from scratch..

The most important thing though is for you to know what the minimum specifications are for what you want to do with the equipment.
Both JIB, Advice & Power Buyer have reasonable on line catalogues where you can get some idea of price - although shops always seem to run 'specials' that are worth a look..

The largest difference in price (& performance) will be what type of processor you end up choosing.
The 2 processor manufacturers are Intel & AMD.
AMD are often seen as a cheaper option than intel, but slower and, possibly, not quite so flexible with applications. That is changing & this article is worth a read if anyone is interested.
https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing ... -amd-cpus/

However the safer option (howbeit more expensive) is probably to stick with Intel..
The main chips in the Intel armoury are the i3, i5 & i7. There is an entry level Intel Pentium chip still produced that is cheaper than the entry level i3, but with little impact on performance. That is the G4560. If you see a suitable piece of equipment that has that chip, at the right price, then it will be finefor basic computing. Intel have also introduced a i9 chip, but at nearly 4 times the price of the i7, it is out of most normal users' reach..
This is a pretty good explanation of the differences (& uses) of the various i series chips..

One last thing about the Intel i series - they have been around for a long time. Intel updated the chips power constantly over their life & so not all i3's (or 5s or 7s) are the same. As they have been updated they have been given a new 'family' name...
They are - from oldest to newest..
Arrandale, Clarkdale, Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake.

It is worth taking notice of if you suddenly spot a computer that seems to been remarkably cheaper compared to others of the same processor - is it actually the same version...that might not matter, but it is worth knowing.. :D

I don't need a huge powerful computer because I don't do anything that takes a lot of power. I do lack patience and for that reason, I do want a fast computer. I have bought three desktop computers off Lazada. One is a commercial Dell that suits me very well. I bought an HP all in one for my wife and it is pathetically slow. I have another HP desktop that is far better than the all in one but the Dell is faster. I have changed the hard drive in the Dell to an SSD.

I also have a custom built desktop at my Jomtien condo. It has an i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM but the case was too cheap and it is falling apart. It has a new power supply but it is still has glitches. I may have someone put it in a new box. It depends on how much that will cost and whether it is worth saving.

Great reply & very informative.
I have a friend who will be buying a basic computer in the next couple of days & has asked me for advice.
He only wants it to watch Sport on UPlay or similar.

What processor would you recommend.
His only other needs are Skype Facebook etc.

To be honest pal52 his internet speed is probably going to have a great deal more impact on the quality of his viewing than the processor.
OK an all singing all dancing top of the range i9 with a speciality graphics card will give someone a better viewing experience on the same ISP than a bog standard box, but I am not sure that the huge additional costs would warrant it for most people.

I would say an i3 with a minimum of 4 GB of memory will be man enough for the job.
If he wants to spend a bit extra then that is probably best directed towards the quality of the monitor & maybe getting them to add a separate video card (between 1,000 to 2,000 baht).

The other thing to remember in Thailand is that most computers come Operation System free.
Legal copies of Microsoft Windows are not cheap & the cheap copies that some shops offer are best avoided at all costs.
Linux Mint, Robolinux, Chaletos & Pepermint are all free Linux alternative OS that are not a million miles away in appearance than Windows 7.
Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon is their latest version of the most popular Linux desktop distribution.

Sorry, old age...failing memory. :D

One other thing that needs to be mentioned is that the latest range of Intel chips will only take Windows 10 as an OS from Microsoft..
Well that is not exactly true. You can load Windows 7 & previous & they will work.
However Microsoft will not send you any updates for the system.
A pretty major drawback with system loopholes seeming to crawl out of the wood work on a regular basis!!

So if someone is a Windows 7 (or earlier) aficionado & are buying a new computer with an Intel i processor then they need to very seriously look at Linux options.
Any of the ones mentioned are nearer Windows 7 to use than the spying Windows 10 is..

Was in Power Buyer in the Plaza this morning.
They had Pentium computers on sale at just under 9,000 baht.
i3's were 13,xxx baht.
Didn't see any desktops above the i3 - but it was a quick look in passing to the refrigerators... :D

My wife wanted a new desktop computer so I bought her one of the nice looking All in Ones. It has a Pentium J3710. She will not use it because it is very slow. She has a Xiaomi Mi5 phone that she says is MUCH faster for her social crap including Facebook. Both her phone and the desktop are using the WiFi from TOT fiber router. I have done all the recommended Windows 10 and HP updates and that hasn't helped.

The other HP i3 is noticeably faster but she still likes her phone better and she doesn't like having the desktop box at her small desk.

Or you could do what most people who in the know do these days and buy a tv with a hdmi connection and most have these days . Most monitors are overpriced , have no speakers and are expensive . I just bought a 24inch tv for my pc at 3500 baht , built in speakers which work through hdmi but will not work through your blue monitor cable .
I also have another 32" tv with my other desktop for streaming sports
