National Chicken Fried Steak Day – October 26, 2023
Crispy breading and creamy gravy — just a few things you can look forward to on October 26, National Chicken Fried Steak Day. It’s a Southern cuisine classic. So, break out your deep fryer, get your gravy ladle ready and get excited to have a full belly of Southern fried goodness!
Invented in Austin, it is an awful dish. Carbs cooked in fat and a nasty oily suace. A bad adpatation of Weiner Schnitel.

It's awesome southern soul food, especially with gravy and mashed potatoes.

The breakfast version is even better!

For all the OLD FELLAS/LADIES out there

World Stroke Day – October 29, 2023

The World Stroke Organization (WSO) states that one in four adults will experience a stroke in their lifetime, and this is why the official World Stroke Day on October 29 aims to raise awareness about the ailment worldwide. In simple words, a stroke happens when the blood supply to your brain is cut off, resulting in temporary or permanent damage to your brain cells. A person can recover from a stroke, but those who do not recover either suffer from one disability or more or, in the worst case scenario, they die. World Stroke Day reinforces the idea of stroke being preventable. One of the best things we can do to reduce our chances of getting a stroke is becoming physically active. Exercising regularly and eating or drinking right will help us not to be part of the one-in-four statistic. Stroke is the number one cause of disabilities, and it is also the second-highest reason behind people dying from a disease.

Create a Great Funeral Day – October 30, 2023

If you follow our tips and plan for Create a Great Funeral Day on October 30, you wouldn’t need to dread not knowing how to organize your loved ones’ funerals. On Create a Great Funeral Day, you can also let others in on how you would like to be sent off. Likewise, it is essential for you to know how your near and dear ones want to bid their final farewell.

HISTORY OF CREATE A GREAT FUNERAL DAY
Stephanie West Allen was greatly overwhelmed during her husband’s funeral when he met with an untimely demise in 1988. She found herself underprepared and emotionally scarred. A decade later, she found her second husband struggling to come to terms with preparing for his mother’s funeral when she passed away. He was caught between his responsibilities of organizing a decent burial and a need to grieve in peace. She observed that in both cases, it would have helped if the person who passed away could have left some directions on how they wanted to be consigned to the powers beyond.

These experiences prompted Allen to dedicate a day towards planning for the funerals of our near and dear ones to prevent the bereaved from having to run from pillar to post to bid the departed a decent farewell. She wanted to inspire people to sit beside their loved ones and talk about how they would like to leave the world, so she decided to register October 30 as Create a Great Funeral Day.

The aim of Create a Great Funeral Day is to develop an environment where people feel comfortable enough to think and talk about how they would like to be remembered and to allow the peace of mind that comes from knowing the departed soul’s final wishes have been fulfilled. With everything planned much in advance, funerals will not add to the stress of loved ones who are already struggling with their bereavement. Planning your funeral ahead of time, irrespective of age or state of health is also an excellent way to dwell on your legacy and on leaving good memories behind.

Use Your Common Sense Day – November 4, 2023

HISTORY OF USE YOUR COMMON SENSE DAY
Common sense as a concept is ancient, first being brought to the limelight by the great philosopher, Aristotle. He described it as the ability with which animals (including humans) process sense perceptions, memories, and imagination to reach many types of judgments. To his thinking, only humans have real reasoned thinking, which takes them beyond common sense. This was then carried forward in the Roman interpretation, which holds that concepts like ideas and perceptions are held by man and make them more sophisticated than animals.

French philosopher, René Descartes, established the most common modern meaning, and its controversies, when he stated that everyone has a similar and sufficient amount of common sense, but it is rarely used well.

Since the Age of Enlightenment, the term “common sense” has been used for a rhetorical effect both approvingly, as a standard for good taste, and source of scientific and logical axioms.

In modern times, common sense is defined as ‘the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live reasonably and safely”. Without any doubt, applying common sense could save one a lot of problems.

Common Sense Day was created by Bud Bilanich, a career mentor, motivational speaker, blogger, and author. He’s starred in some leading TV shows and magazines and has written 19 books that highlight how to succeed in life, and how the application of common sense is vital to that success. Common Sense Day was first celebrated in 2015.

National Nachos Day – November 6, 2023

Any discussion about the history of nachos has to begin in the Mexican border town of Piedras Negras — just west of the Rio Grande — across which sits Eagle Pass, Texas. One day in 1943 the wives of U.S. soldiers stationed at Ft. Duncan dropped in on a Piedras Negras hotspot called the Victory Club.

Unfortunately the restaurant had closed for the day.

Still, a manager named Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya decided to throw a dish together based on whatever ingredients he still had left. Among them? Cheese and tortillas. Anaya sliced the fried tortillas into triangles, added some shredded cheddar and jalapeño peppers — and started a new tradition which bears his name to this day. (Thanks Nacho! Where would out Super Bowl parties be without you?)

Speaking of which, an alternative take on nachos — using the now familiar cheese sauce — appeared at a Texas Rangers baseball game at Arlington Stadium in 1976. Two years later the iconic ABC sportscaster Howard Cosell mentioned the term “nachos” during a Monday Night Football game — helping to turn this rather simple dish into an American tradition.

Note: Piedras Negras continues to celebrate “The International Nacho Festival” each October — complete with live music, art, cultural activities, and a “giant nacho” contest.

National Cancer Awareness Day – November 7, 2023

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CANCER AWARENESS DAY
National Cancer Awareness Day was first announced by the Indian Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan in September 2014, and that 7th November will be observed as National Cancer Awareness Day every year to generate awareness about early detection and avoid leading cancer-causing lifestyles.

Harsh Vardhan launched a state-level of cancer control, encouraging early detection and research into curing cancer. National Cancer Awareness Day also encourages people to report to government hospitals, CGHS, and municipal clinics for a free screening. Information booklets are also circulated to generate awareness on how to avoid getting cancer and to look for signs of early symptoms. In 1975, the National Cancer Control Programme was initiated to provide cancer treatment facilities in India. The program was modified in 1984-85 to provide thrust to prevention and early detection of cancer.

National Cancer Awareness Day is observed on 7th November to coincide with the birth anniversary of the Novel-prize winning scientist Madame Curie. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867, Marie Curie is remembered for her discovery of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to the fight against cancer. Her work led to the development of nuclear energy and radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer.

In India, nearly 1.1 million new cases are being reported annually. It is estimated that one woman dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes in India. Tobacco (smoked and smokeless) use accounted for 3,17,928 deaths in men and women in 2018. Cancers of the oral cavity and lungs account for over 25% of cancer deaths in males and cancer of the breast and oral cavity account for 25% of cancers in females.
Today, Dr. Harsh Vardhan advises that if detected early, cancer could be treated at a fraction of the cost that is incurred when diagnosed at an advanced stage. Its mortality rate is also lowered substantially if people report for screening when the earliest symptoms are manifested.

National Seat Belt Day – November 14, 2023

HISTORY OF NATIONAL SEAT BELT DAY
Seat belts have been around since the 19th century. Edward J. Claghorn received the first U.S. patent for safety belts but his design was not intended for cars. In the 1930s, physicians recommended lap belts in their vehicles and suggested manufacturers do the same in their models. Lap belts were used in public transport like streetcars, preventing passengers from flying out of their seats during accidents.

The first vehicle in the U.S. to offer seat belts as a safety option was the Nash Rambler, back in 1950 when seat belts were still a novelty. Despite growing evidence that they helped save lives and reduce injuries, critics still resisted their use, claiming they were ineffective and may trap passengers if their cars were on fire or submerged in water. In 1958, Saab became the first vehicle manufacturer to fit seat belts as standard features. One year later, Nils Bohlin — Volvo’s first chief safety engineer — patented the three-point seat belt. It improved the rudimentary two-point seat belt, which sometimes did more harm than good in accidents.

After making the three-point seat belt standard in Sweden, Volvo opened up the patent so other car manufacturers could adopt this essential safety feature in their models. By 1968, seat belts were a standard requirement in all U.S.-manufactured vehicles. Today, seat belts are a valued safety mechanism in cars, helping to save thousands of lives and several hundred million dollars in medical costs.

Rose Day on February 7
Marks the beginning of Valentine’s week. On this romantic day, roses are gifted to that special someone to celebrate love and affection. It is believed that Victorians began the practice of exchanging roses with their loved ones to communicate unspoken feelings. On Rose Day, you can give your loved ones red, pink, yellow, orange, white, lavender, and blue roses. Every rose signifies a different emotion. You can also celebrate Rose Day by wearing any of these colors, planting a rose plant, or even buying a piece of jewelry in rose gold.
