Honduras: Discovery of America Day – October 8, 2023

Discovery of America Day, observed on October 8 annually, is the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in Central America. The holiday was previously marked on his arrival but it was changed in 2015 to fall on October 8 in order to accommodate a long weekend at the start of October. The Western world started on the day of America’s Discovery. The famous European explorer, whose explorations altered the destiny of two continents, is honored in Honduras with a national holiday. It is a public holiday in the country and it is traditionally honored during the actual anniversary.

European explorer Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. An ardent student of geography and history, Columbus started sailing at age 14 and spent most of his time making maps of Europe. However, the little he made from the sale of the said maps, he would save it and make plans for adventures at sea.

His journey toward the West began in the late 15th Century. After six years of requests and pleas from the Royal Court, the explorer earned the sponsorship of Catholic Monarchs Queen Isabella I and individual Ferdinand II for a journey towards the West. After two unsuccessful voyages, Columbus sailed for the third time and landed at Guanahani. On October 12, 1498, Columbus, the great European explorer and the first known person to find the American coastlines, first set foot in the Americas. His discovery set in motion one of the most remarkable turns of events in the history of the world.

Discovery of America Day commemorates the anniversary of the event that changed the universe of the American continents. The day of discovery is marked and emphasized as a significant historical event in Honduras. The celebration of Discovery of America Day symbolizes the resilience and cohesion of Hondurans in the face of the contentious and terrible effects of colonization

HISTORY OF LAO: BOAT RACING FESTIVAL

During this time of year, boat racing festivals are held in numerous cities and villages throughout Laos. Depending on the area, races occur on different days. The day of the week that Boun Ok Phansa, the final day of Buddhist Lent, falls on may also affect when the public holiday is set. Vientiane’s Boun Suang Heua is the largest and most well-attended of all boat racing festivals. Races on Fa Ngum Road along the Mekong River attract participants from all around the nation.
The races typically cover a two-kilometer distance. However, the starting and finishing points shift slightly yearly based on the river’s level.

A traditional racing boat, which can accommodate around 50 rowers, is crafted from a single tree. Revered as holy objects, the boats are cleaned and offered in the days leading up to the races. These boats can be classified into three categories — sports boats for men, traditional boats for men, and traditional boats for women.

Companies and government agencies in Vientiane frequently fund the city’s rowing teams. The women’s races normally happen first and are followed by the men’s. High-ranking officials deliver trophies and cash to the winners in each category, and both the races and award ceremonies are streamed live on Lao’s national television channel. Leading up to the races, the streets fill with enthusiastic fans cheering on their favorite teams. Vendors also crowd the streets selling all kinds of clothing, food, and beverages.

오늘은 한글날입니다.
October 9 is Korean Alphabet (Hangul) Day.

This is a national Korean commemorative day that marks the invention and proclamation of Hangul, the alphabet and writing system created by a group of talents that was led by individual Sejong the Great in 1443 and established in 1446. Since the current writing system consisted of many characters, it made it difficult for the citizens to learn. Therefore, his majesty simplified the writing system to promote literacy among the people. Thanks to the creation of Hangul, Korea was able to establish its official language and writing system in that is now being taught all over the world!

For those who dont know what a Double tenth day is, sometimes a link is appreciated
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_ ... C%20ROC%29.

National Day of the Republic of China (Chinese: 中華民國國慶日),[3][4] also referred to as, Double Ten Day or Double Tenth Day, is a public holiday on 10 October, now held annually as the national day in Taiwan (officially the Republic of China, ROC). It commemorates the start of the Wuchang Uprising on 10 October 1911 which ultimately led to the collapse of the imperial Qing dynasty and establishment of the Republic of China on 1 January 1912.[5] The day was once held as public holiday in mainland China during the Mainland Period of the ROC before 1949. The subsequent People's Republic of China continues to observe the Anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution at the same date but not as a public holiday, which put more emphasis on its revolutionary characteristics as commemoration of a historical event rather than celebration to the founding of the Republic of China.

Following the outcome of the Chinese Civil War, the ROC government lost control of mainland China to the Chinese Communist Party and retreated to the island of Taiwan in December 1949. The National Day is mainly celebrated in all ROC-controlled territories, but it is also celebrated by many overseas Chinese communities.

"For those who dont know what a Double tenth day is,"

This an assumption and not a declaration of representation,
But still the link wasnt posted . I believe it was yourself that has reminded others to supply.
As for form you are assuming that I know what an old bean is.

I was assuming you might not know 'old bean' and would feel a need to respond in one form or another to my statement because that's what you are famous for, Doodoo. Enjoy the Double Tenth.

Be Bald and Be Free Day – October 14, 2023

Shaving heads and beards began a lot earlier than one might think. The early men from the Stone Age used sharpened clamshells and tweezers to shave or pluck out hair. In ancient Rome and Egypt, shaving heads was common amongst priests and also the common folk due to extremely hot climates. Egyptians are said to have developed shaving tools made of gold and copper.

In the late 1950s, shaved heads started becoming a trend. Bald men were seen as more virile, confident, tough, and disciplined. Many actors, politicians, musicians, and sports stars adopted the bald look. In the 1990s, the shaved head style was at its peak with people like Michael Jordan, Evander Holyfield, and Bruce Willis further popularizing the trend.

Since people battling cancer lose their hair due to radiation and chemotherapy, people began shaving their heads, either as a way to show support for the people battling cancer or for fundraisers. Alopecia areata, simply known as male pattern baldness, causes a receding hairline in men and irreversible baldness, and it can cause body dysmorphia and poor self-image among men. To encourage men and to boost their self-esteem, many campaigns were organized with their primary motto being to show men that baldness was nothing they should be ashamed of, and in fact, men with shaved heads looked more attractive and confident.

One of these campaigns was Be Bald and Be Free Day, which was started by the founders of Wellcat Herbs, Thomas Roy and Ruth Roy. Though it is not known when the day was celebrated for the first time, Be Bald and Be Free Day has encouraged a lot of men and women to shave their heads and be proud of their looks.

National Grouch Day – October 15, 2023

To honor the world’s favorite grouch, Oscar, from “Sesame Street,” National Grouch Day was created on October 15. This is a day to celebrate all the grouches we know — or to embrace the grouch that lives inside all of us. On this day no one can stop us from complaining, being irritable, or wallowing in misery. Because that is what grouches do! Also, this day teaches us that it’s good to spend time processing our negative emotions. On social media this a fun day with people posting jokes, memes, funny photos, and stories.

National Liqueur Day – October 16, 2023

Liqueurs are basically alcoholic beverages made from distilled spirits — with lots of added flavors. Some call them cordials, while others call them schnapps. They all add up to different varieties of liqueurs. Maraschino, Orange, Coffee, Sweet, or Sour — it doesn’t matter the flavor to be celebrated. Grab your liqueur of choice and toast a friend on October 16 as we celebrate National Liqueur Day!

YEAR 1300's
Liqueur made an appearance in medicine
European monks administered liqueurs, descending from herbal medicines

YEAR 1533
Liqueur is introduced to the French court
Catherine de Medici married Henry II of France and introduced liqueur to the French court, making it a fashionable drink.

YEAR 2018
Statistics reveal a hike in cordial consumption
Over 1.14 million households in the United States have liqueur consumers.

On this day in 1945 the United Nations came into being

On a personal note, my parents married in Glasgow at 1PM the same day. Less than one mile away another couple married at the same time. Both couples bumped into each other when they stayed in the same hotel in Oban, they met and had dinner together but never kept in touch.

30 years later I met their daughter in Sydney, and we were married for 29 years. When the couples visited us on the birth of our first child, in 1979, they compared notes and realised they has met all those years ago. What are the odds for this unlikely outcome?
I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani

Sounds like an episode from the Twilight Zone but I agree, that's a pretty incredible and amazing coincidence. I wonder how that fits in with the six degrees of separation thing?
