?so why are SH cars/trucks so dear ????????? can any forumites shed any light on this ??
Here's a possibility:
Back in the late 90's we were looking at new/old homes. Back then, a basic new home went for 1.2 million (in that range). A beat up similar style old home with 2" cracks down the walls went for 1.2 million. In other words, there didn't seem to be any loss in perceived value due to the lack of maintenance or shoddy construction.
Likewise, there are a few buildings that were built just before the economic collapse of 1997 (a multi story building across from the CAT office is one)....never occupied but fully complete. Back in the US, the building would be auctioned off to the highest bidder.....for pennies (if that) on the dollar. Here? It remains vacant for 14 years. There are many others like it in town.
Along the same lines, I've never seen a tag/yard sale in Thailand. Thais don't seem to embrace the idea of selling used items for a fraction of their original cost. Not so many years ago, there were shops on Phosri Rd selling radios/rice cookers/calculators/etc vintage 1990's....but trying to sell them at their original price.
In a nutshell, maybe the reason cars hold their value here is because Thais don't embrace the idea of devaluation.
Is that old beat up shell of an airplane still sitting outside the terminal? That'd fit into the same pattern of holding on to something that's nearly worthless rather than sell it off at a loss.
Just a thought.

I posted these photos a few months ago......the driver had recently purchased the truck, used, and was carting a load of [u]empty[/u] containers. He hit a dip in the road near the Nongwahsaw market, and the truck split in two. Upon closer inspection, it was obvious the frame had been welded.....probably taking the good front from one vehicle and welding it to the good back of another.

Welding, that's funny. Tacking is the most I've seen in Thailand. A Half Decent Boilermaker would make a Job like that last a life time

Doc. Back home in 1991 i bought a second hand Volvo 240. 27,000 miles on clock. From a second hand car dealer. Besides tyres and the stuff that wear away, ie. bulbs and wipers, brake linings, pipes etc. The only things i had to replace was the distributor cap and points. And i did 90,000 miles on that Volvo, not K's. throughout the U.K. in 15 years. Never had trouble with steering etc. and also i was what you call a lazy driver. I got it serviced at work, they had a motor car service center there. Thats where i found out that the engine in that model Volvo was a French one from Renult( excuse spelling) with the dis. at the back and a pig to get at.
I know you can get a dud with every car, but one bad apple does not mean the rest are. The same applies to new cars.
My friend bought a new R.R., in the first year he had so much trouble with it. Fair enought R.R. compensated him and In the end they give him a new model and it was perfect. So even the best expensive cars suffer from it.
As to the OP i would, as a number of posters have said, buy a new car, if you can. I bought a Toyoto Soluna Vios in 2007, five years or 100,000K warrenty. Next year, done 75,000K now, when it is five years old i will trade it in for a new model. All i have had to buy for this car is two tyres, so far. Touch wood.
