Canada or the Quad?

Post by Laan Yaa Mo » September 23, 2023, 10:54 am

Gwynne Dyer is one of those independent reporters/authors who get under the skin of politicians, which tends to mean he is good at what he does. In this article, Gwynn gets to the heart of the recent dispute between Canada and India, and what really matters in geopolitical terms. He deftly weaves Trudeau's recent 'delay' returning to Canada from India into the suspected murder in Vancouver of a Sikh separatist by an agent of the Indian Government. What might be at stake? The Quad. It's a well-written article.

Great read thanks. I liked the scathing, "India will never apologise or even admit wrongdoing, because great states, like four-year-olds, simply don’t do that sort of thing."

I like that line too. I hope I don't forget it as a statement like that could prove useful on a forum.

One wonders why the Bangkok Post printed the article, but left out the following two paragraphs:

[This sort of thing happens all the time. Prince Muhammad bin Salman orders the murder, dismemberment and disposal of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyib Erdoğan waits four years before visiting Saudi Arabia again. (Joe Biden even waited another ten weeks after that.)

Russian exiles are poisoned in England by Moscow’s agents with monotonous regularity, and the British government doesn’t even hit ‘pause’ on the relationship. (Or at least it didn’t until the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and even now the Russian embassy in London is still open.)[/quote]

One key point that RT, and you, seem to have conveniently forgotten is that the Stalin induced famine through collectivisation caused the deaths of close to four million people in the Ukraine in the 1930s. Subsequently, the advancing Germans appeared like liberators, and the Nazis seemed like a better option, to Ukrainians than to side with Stalin and the Communists. This is not to say that Nazis should be celebrated; however, historical context should be taken into consideration, no.

I haven't "conveniently forgotten" anything that my SCE Highers Band A pass in history taught me. But a few may have found the historical context enlightening so it's all good, no worries.

Did you assume I that I share the 'opinion' of RT?

I try not to assume anything or the ever watchful Doodoo might catch me out. I noted the RT article, and remembered that the RT news channel 795 consistently lumps Nazis and Ukrainians together, but they conveniently forget about the famine created by collectivisation in the Ukrainian and Russian countryside initiated by Stalin in the 1930s.

Been going for a few weeks now, but it looks like Justin Trudeau is no longer on Modi Christmas card list. \:D/ \:D/

"India has asked Canada to withdraw about 40 diplomatic staff from India, reports say, in a sharp escalation of a weeks-long crisis.

Those who stayed past 10 October would lose their diplomatic immunity, the Financial Times first reported.

Last month, Canada said India may have been behind the killing of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil, which India has denied".

Trudeau was more direct. He said India was responsible for the murder.
